Admission Guidelines

Applicants from abroad may discover that their certificates, diplomas and qualifications, which
would normally entitle them to study in their respective lands of origin, do not grant them direct
admission to a university in Germany. Prospective students may be required to first take part in a
“Feststellungsprüfung” at a Studienkolleg. The successful completion of this exam grants the ap-
plicant access to a specified range of subjects at university, in accordance with the type of course/
exam taken at Studienkolleg.

German Studienkollegs offer one-year preparatory courses for the examination, in order to pre-
pare students for their intended field of study. However, Munich Studienkolleg does not offer solely
German language courses. Applicants require a good command of the German language (mini-
mum B1+). Munich Studienkolleg caters to all Bavarian universities.

Applicants wishing to attend Bavarian Hochschulen / Fachhochschulen (universities of applied sciences) will be directed to Co-
burg Studienkolleg (www.sk-coburg.de ).

Please note:
Send your application documents to the university which you wish to attend after the preparatory
year and apply for the course you want to do. Once received, your documents will be proofed
and examined as to ensure satisfaction of all prerequisites. Should all conditions be met, the stu-
dent will receive an invitation (issued by the university) to the admissions test at Munich
Studienkolleg. Applications must be received by the university no later than January 15th or July
15th (depending on which semester a student wants to attend). Please do not send any docu-
ments to Munich Studienkolleg. Students are advised not to wait until the last day of application,
otherwise potential visa problems could arise.

APPLICATION
Please contact the universities for the application form or download it from their web-sites. All
documents must be presented in the form of officially certified copies. For documents issued in
languages other than German, (at some universities also other than English, French, Spanish or
Portuguese), a translation into German by translators authorized by a German court of law or by
a German consulate is required. Applicants who have not yet met all qualifications for university
admission in their respective countries will not be permitted to attend Studienkolleg.

ADMISSIONS TEST
A sample of the admissions test can be obtained on www.studienkolleg.mhn.de . Applicants for
technical, mathematical or science studies (“T-Kurs”) have to sit an additional test in mathemat-
ics. Again, please check our homepage for sample exercises.
As a rule, the admissions test takes place two weeks before the classes at Studienkolleg begin.
The admissions test can only be taken by applicants who have applied through a Bavarian uni-
versity.

STUDENT STATUS
The courses at Munich Studienkolleg start in February and in September. After being admitted to
Studienkolleg, participants are enrolled as university students with the special status of students
doing an “academic bridging course’ (“Vorbereitungsstudium”).
After having successfully completed “Feststellungsprüfung” (i.e. the final exam after two semes-
ters), they can apply to all German universities to be accepted as a regular student in courses
that relate to the areas they have covered at Studienkolleg. If there are additional university en-
trance requirements, these have to be met as well (e.g. “numerus clausus”).

VISA REQUIREMENTS
Please bear in mind that the issuing of a student visa (category D, Aufenthaltszweck/ purpose:
Studium) can take up to three months. Students cannot take up Studienkolleg with a ‘tourist visa’
or a ‘Schengen visa’.

FEES, COST OF LIVING, AGE LIMIT
The courses at Studienkolleg are free of charge. A registration fee of € 118,50 per semester is to
be paid to the university. Students are obliged to take out a health insurance policy. Costs for text
books and other learning materials amount to approximately € 50 per semester. Cost of living will
amount to approximately € 700 per month. Finding an affordable place to stay is an issue which
should be addressed very early. Studienkolleg can only be of very limited assistance as regards
accommodation.
In general, there are no German scholarships for the preparatory year at the Studienkolleg.
There is no age limit. Applicants who are not yet 18 will need their parents’ consent and cannot
open a bank account unless their parents are present.
